Moon Jae-in is a South Korean politician and civil rights lawyer. He served as President of South Korea, from 10 May, 2017 to 9 May, 2022. He was previously Chief of Staff to the President, from 12 March, 2007 to 24 February, 2008, Member of the National Assembly, from 30 May, 2012 to 29 May, 2016, and Leader of the Democratic Party, from 9 February, 2015 to 27 January, 2016.

President Moon’s father, Moon Yong-hyung, fled from his native city of Hamhung (now part of North Korea) during the Korean War, and eventually settled in Geoje. He worked as a head of agriculture department, and later sold socks. President Moon’s mother was named Kang Han-ok. President Moon was raised in Busan. He is married to vocalist Kim Jung-sook, with whom he has two children.

President Moon’s paternal grandfather was Moon Jeong-gi (the son of Moon Do-jong and Lady Ju). Do-jong was the son of Moon Jin-hong and Lady Lee.

President Moon’s paternal grandmother was named Lady Ju.
